Case Study
Kovai Breaking Through California’s Toughest Rock

"In my 36 years of hard rock drilling experience, I feel it is quite possibly the fastest penetrating hammer on the market today."

The Challenge

Wellco Drilling Inc. has operated in the water well drilling industry for over 36 years, consistently tackling some of California’s most demanding hard rock formations. Despite their decades of expertise, the team faced a persistent operational bottleneck: their conventional DTH hammers struggled to maintain consistent penetration rates in highly abrasive granite and basalt formations common to the Raymond, CA region.

The limitations were clear and severely impacted project economics: slower drilling cycles, frequent component wear, increased downtime, and unpredictable hammer behavior at varying depths. Each of these factors drove up project costs and strained delivery timelines. Wellco Drilling needed a definitive step-change in hammer performance—not an incremental improvement.

The Solution: Kovai 6" Class Dth Hammer

After Evaluating Available Alternatives, Wellco Drilling Selected The Kovai 6″ Class Dth Hammer, Engineered By Kovai Drilling Applications LLC, A San Jose-based Manufacturer With Over 15 Years Of R&d In Down-the- Hole Drilling Technology. Kovai Hammers Are Purpose-built For The Most Demanding Drilling Environments, Combining Optimized Piston Dynamics With Advanced Air Cycle Efficiency.

Optimized Piston Energy Transfer

Longer piston stroke delivers maximum impact energy per blow, directly translating to faste rock breakage.

Advanced Air Cycle Efficiency

Precision-engineered airflow channels ensure peak hammer frequency with minimal energy loss at all operating pressures.

High-Grade Wear Components

Special heat treatment processes harden internal parts, dramatically extending service intervals in abrasive formations.

Robust & Serviceable Design

Groove-free reversible barrel with thick walls protects against wear. Only 14 component parts mean faster field maintenance.

Field Performance Results

Upon deploying the KOVAI 6″ Class DTH Hammer at their Raymond, CA water well drilling project, Wellco Drilling experienced an immediate and measurable step-up in operational performance:

Exceptional Penetration Rate: Achieved the fastest Rate of Penetration (ROP) in Wellco’s operating history.

Depth-Stable Output: Consistent hammer power output maintained flawlessly from surface to total target depth.

Smooth Operation: Vibration-reduced drilling operation throughout, safeguarding rig equipment.

Minimized Interruptions: Dramatically reduced maintenance interventions and mid-project stops.

Superior Cost Efficiency: Extended durability in abrasive granite led to a substantially lower cost per foot drilled.
